Busy, but Missing the Point

Aug 9, 2026    Doug Modic

In Luke 10:38–42, Jesus teaches us that it is possible to be busy—even busy serving Him—while missing what matters most: Jesus Himself. Through the contrasting responses of Martha and Mary, we see that good things like work, ministry, family responsibilities, and service can become distractions when they replace time spent listening to and receiving from Christ. Jesus calls us to sit before we serve, listen before we labor, and receive before we give. For individuals, families, and the church, the goal is not simply fuller calendars or more activity, but lives shaped by Christ and sent out to make Him known. Ultimately, our accomplishments will pass away, but Christ is the good portion that cannot be taken away.
